Deeply superstitious, Bruckner kept lists of his favorite numbers, considered “7” especially lucky, and was even known to count the bricks of a wall obsessively.

Bruckner greatly admired Richard Wagner and was reportedly so overwhelmed when he first met him that he fell to his knees. His devotion to both music and faith also inspired works such as his powerful Te Deum, which he described as a “prayer of thanks” to God.

Despite his achievements, Bruckner often struggled with self-confidence and repeatedly revised his compositions. He even kept careful records of his failed romantic proposals. This mix of humility, odd habits, and genius makes Bruckner one of the most fascinating figures in classical music history.

Silent Night, the serene and soulful Christmas carol, has a backstory as enchanting as its melody. It was first performed on Christmas Eve in 1818 in the small Austrian village of Oberndorf. A young priest, Joseph Mohr, had written the poem two years earlier and brought it to his friend Franz Xaver Gruber, a schoolteacher and organist, just hours before the Christmas service.

According to tradition, the church organ had broken, and Mohr needed music for the evening’s mass. Gruber quickly composed a melody, and the two performed it with Mohr accompanying on guitar and a small choir providing support. In this modest way, Stille Nacht made its debut at St. Nicholas Church.

The carol’s gentle melody and message of peace soon spread far beyond the village. By the mid-19th century, it had travelled widely and was eventually translated into hundreds of languages.

From candlelit chapels to the famous Christmas truce of World War I, Silent Night has continued to resonate with listeners around the world—a quiet reminder of peace, hope, and shared humanity.

O Come, All Ye Faithful is one of the most beloved Christmas carols, yet its origins remain somewhat mysterious. Known originally as Adeste Fideles, the hymn was written in Latin sometime in the 18th century.

Many scholars believe that John Francis Wade, an English Catholic living in exile in France, composed both the music and the lyrics around 1743. Wade, a scribe by trade, had fled religious persecution in England and devoted much of his life to copying and composing sacred music.

However, the story does not end there. Some theories suggest the melody may have earlier roots, possibly connected to Portuguese royalty or even to Handel himself.

The hymn eventually made its way back to England, where Frederick Oakeley translated it into English in 1841, giving us the familiar words sung today.

From candlelit chapels to bustling city squares, O Come, All Ye Faithful continues to bring people together, its timeless melody inviting listeners to gather, rejoice, and celebrate.

In early 1900s Japan, Lieutenant Pinkerton, a carefree American naval officer, secures a house and a wife—Butterfly, a young and hopeful geisha. To her, the marriage is a grand romance; to him, it is little more than a casual arrangement. Despite the imbalance, Butterfly falls deeply in love and leaves her family behind to embrace her new life.

Soon after the wedding, Pinkerton sails back to America, promising to return. Butterfly waits faithfully for years, convinced that his love is genuine, even as her money and family support disappear. During this time she gives birth to a son, whom she raises believing his father will someday return.

When Pinkerton finally comes back, he brings devastating news. He has married an American woman, and they have arrived to take Butterfly’s child.

Heartbroken but resolute, Butterfly chooses to give her son a future while accepting her own tragic fate.

The oboe—a reed-wielding sorcerer with a history as rich as its sound. Its story begins in ancient times, when double-reed instruments were used in festivals and ceremonies across the Mediterranean world.

By the Middle Ages, one of its ancestors—the shawm—was a bold and powerful instrument often heard in town squares and outdoor celebrations, known for its bright and penetrating tone.

The modern oboe began to take shape in 17th-century France. Court musicians sought a more refined sound than the shawm could provide, leading to the creation of the hautbois, meaning “high wood.” This new instrument brought elegance and expressive beauty to royal orchestras.

As music grew more complex, the oboe evolved as well. By the 19th century, improved key systems allowed players to perform increasingly intricate music.

Ah, the classical flute—a slender silver swan with a past as colourful as its tones. Its story begins over 40,000 years ago, when prehistoric humans drilled holes in bone to create haunting melodies that echoed through caves.

Fast-forward to the Renaissance, and the flute entered European courts as a wooden, one-keyed instrument, admired for its gentle and expressive sound.

By the 18th century, however, musicians wanted greater flexibility and precision. In the 19th century, Theobald Boehm transformed the instrument, introducing a new metal design and an innovative key system that allowed flautists to play with far greater agility and accuracy.

Today’s flute is a remarkable blend of engineering and artistry—proof that even a simple tube of air and holes can evolve into one of the orchestra’s most elegant voices.

Imagine young Felix Mendelssohn, already a musical prodigy by the age of nine, astonishing audiences in 1820s Germany with his piano playing and compositions that sounded remarkably mature for his years. While most children were still learning the basics of music, Mendelssohn was already performing confidently and composing works that revealed extraordinary talent.

By the age of twelve, he had written an opera, and at seventeen, he captivated the musical world with his Overture to A Midsummer Night’s Dream—a work so light and sparkling that it seemed to capture the magical world of Shakespeare’s play.

Mendelssohn’s music was elegant, lively, and full of charm. His style balanced classical clarity with a romantic sense of expression, creating works that felt both refined and deeply emotional.

From the sweeping Scottish Symphony to the vibrant Italian Symphony, Mendelssohn’s music reflected his love of travel, literature, and history—qualities that helped shape the distinctive voice of one of the nineteenth century’s most remarkable composers.

Picture young Frédéric Chopin, a musical prodigy in early 19th-century Poland, taking the piano by storm while many of his peers were still learning their scales. By the age of seven, he was already composing pieces and astonishing audiences with his talent, quickly gaining attention from the local nobility and music lovers alike. Even as a child, Chopin’s music blended delicate melodies with moments of surprising drama and expressive flair.

At the age of twenty, Chopin left Poland for Paris, where he soon became one of the city’s most admired musicians. His Nocturnes seemed to capture the quiet poetry of night, while his Polonaises carried the spirit and pride of his Polish homeland.

The myth of Orpheus and Eurydice has been a cornerstone of opera since its earliest days. Early operatic versions appeared around 1600 in works by composers such as Giulio Caccini and Jacopo Peri. In the story, Orpheus, a legendary musician, journeys to the Underworld to rescue his wife Euridice, using the power of his music to charm Hades into releasing her.

However, there is one condition: he must not turn to look at her as they leave. Unable to resist, Orpheus turns—and Euridice is lost forever.

Opera composers returned to this myth again and again, sometimes ending the story in tragedy and other times granting it a happier resolution. One of the earliest and most famous settings is Monteverdi’s 1607 opera L’Orfeo, which includes the powerful aria “Tu sei morta,” a striking example of his expressive word painting.

Another important version is Gluck’s 1762 Orfeo ed Euridice. As part of his operatic reforms, Gluck simplified the drama and music, creating a more direct and emotional style, highlighted by the famous aria “Che farò senza Euridice?”

Over the centuries, other composers—including Bertoni and Fux—also adapted the myth, each reflecting the musical style of their region and time. The story’s themes of love, loss, and the transformative power of music have ensured its lasting place on the operatic stage.

On 24 February 1901, Gustav Mahler conducted Bruckner’s Fifth Symphony. Unhappy with some passages, Mahler made cuts to the score, which led to criticism for what some called the “shameful mutilation” of the work. Later that evening, after conducting Die Zauberflöte, Mahler collapsed from an intestinal hemorrhage. His sister Justine found him, and doctors performed an emergency operation that saved his life.

Mahler later admitted that the experience made him question the value of returning to life, a reflection of his lifelong preoccupation with death.

This health crisis profoundly affected Mahler’s music. Moving away from aspects of his earlier works, he developed a new instrumental approach that became evident in his Fifth Symphony, which premiered in 1904.

Emphasizing counterpoint, Mahler abandoned earlier programmatic elements and focused instead on internalized drama. The symphony, often described as a journey from despair to joy, reflects both his near-death experience and his love for Alma Schindler.

This shift marked a significant turning point in Mahler’s compositional style, aligning his music with the emerging musical language of the twentieth century.

The story of Franz Schubert is one of brilliance overshadowed by struggle. Born in 1797, Schubert was a prodigy whose talent blossomed in the vibrant musical life of Vienna. He composed more than 600 songs, along with symphonies, operas, and chamber works—creating a body of music that would later help define the Romantic era. Yet during his lifetime, Schubert remained largely unknown, living in the shadow of giants such as Beethoven.

Schubert’s life was marked by poverty and ill health, but his devotion to music never faded. He was part of a close circle of friends who gathered at musical evenings known as “Schubertiades,” where his compositions were performed in intimate settings. These gatherings became the lifeblood of his creative world, allowing his music to flourish even without widespread recognition.

Tragically, Schubert died at the young age of 31. He left behind an extraordinary treasury of music that would only be fully appreciated after his death.

Today, Schubert stands as one of the most beloved and influential composers in the history of classical music.

Jacques Offenbach, often called the “Mozart of the Champs-Élysées,” was a musical genius who brought sparkle and wit to 19th-century Parisian opera. Born in Cologne, Germany, in 1819, he was already an accomplished cellist by the age of fourteen. But Offenbach had bigger ambitions—he wanted to bring a sense of fun and joie de vivre to the operatic stage.

After moving to Paris, he became the leading figure in operetta, a lighter and more playful cousin to grand opera. Offenbach’s lively melodies, sharp humour, and theatrical flair quickly made him a favourite of Parisian audiences.

His most famous work, Orpheus in the Underworld, turned the ancient Greek myth into a satirical musical spectacle and introduced the world to the famous “Can-Can,” transforming classical mythology into something closer to a musical celebration.

Although his life included periods of financial difficulty, Offenbach never lost his gift for entertaining audiences.

His final work, The Tales of Hoffmann, was completed after his death and remains one of the most beloved operas in the repertoire, securing his reputation as a master of witty and imaginative music.

Leopold Mozart, the father of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, was quite the character. A talented composer, violinist, and teacher in his own right, he became best known for managing his son’s budding genius like an 18th-century stage parent.

Leopold was determined to shape young Wolfgang into a musical star—and he was willing to do whatever it took. Recognizing early that his son was a prodigy, he organized long European tours, presenting Wolfgang’s extraordinary talents before kings, queens, and aristocratic audiences across the continent.

But Leopold was more than just a demanding parent. He was also a careful planner who understood that his son’s remarkable abilities could open doors to both recognition and financial stability.

Though he could sometimes be strict and controlling, Leopold remained deeply devoted to the success of his children.

While his own compositions were eventually overshadowed by Wolfgang’s genius, Leopold’s role as teacher, mentor, and manager left an undeniable mark on the story of classical music.

Farinelli, born Carlo Maria Broschi in 1705, was one of the most famous and celebrated castrati singers of the 18th century. Castrated at a young age to preserve his high, ethereal voice, Farinelli trained under the renowned composer Nicola Porpora and quickly rose to prominence in the opera world. His extraordinary vocal range, technical brilliance, and emotional depth captivated audiences across Europe.

Farinelli’s career took him from Italy to the courts of Vienna, London, and Spain. In London, he became a musical sensation, drawing large crowds to the opera houses with performances delivered with unmistakable flair.

Yet in 1737, at the height of his fame, Farinelli left the public stage after accepting an invitation from King Philip V of Spain to serve as a court musician. For more than two decades, he reportedly sang nightly to soothe the ailing king, leaving behind his life in opera.

Farinelli eventually retired to Italy in 1759, where he lived until his death in 1782. His remarkable career and legendary voice secured his place as one of the most extraordinary singers in the history of music.

The history of the castrato—a male singer castrated before puberty to preserve a high-pitched voice—dates back to the mid-16th century. The practice began in Italy and was partly driven by the Catholic Church’s ban on women singing in church choirs. Preventing the physical changes of puberty allowed these singers to retain a unique vocal quality: high, powerful, and remarkably flexible.

Castrati reached the height of their fame in the 17th and 18th centuries, particularly in opera, where they became celebrated for performing demanding virtuoso roles. Singers such as Farinelli achieved international fame, captivating audiences across Europe with their extraordinary voices and dramatic presence.

Over time, however, the practice became increasingly controversial. As musical tastes and social attitudes changed during the 19th century, the demand for castrati declined.

By the early 1900s, the practice had effectively ended. The last known castrato, Alessandro Moreschi—who sang in the Sistine Chapel Choir—died in 1922. His recordings remain the only surviving glimpse of a voice that once dominated the operatic stage.

The concertmaster is like the rockstar of the classical orchestra, holding a role that blends leadership and artistry. As the first violinist, they are not just another player—they are the conductor’s closest musical partner, helping guide the entire string section. From deciding how the bows should move across the strings to shaping style and phrasing, the concertmaster helps ensure the orchestra performs as a unified ensemble.

Before the concert even begins, the concertmaster leads the orchestra in tuning, signaling the oboist for the familiar “A” that brings everyone together in pitch. During rehearsals, they often serve as a key problem solver, helping the string section coordinate technique and sound.

Once the performance begins, the concertmaster’s cues and presence help keep the orchestra together, working closely with the conductor.

And when the score calls for it, the concertmaster steps forward to perform important violin solos, often becoming a featured voice within the orchestra.

The court’s musical life was dominated by the grand spectacles of Jean-Baptiste Lully, the king’s favourite composer. Lully’s operas and ballets were not merely entertainment—they also reinforced the grandeur and authority of the monarchy. Lavish performances often took place at Versailles, with the king himself occasionally appearing as a dancer. These events showcased the court’s sophistication and helped set the cultural standard across Europe.

Music at the French court was not limited to large spectacles. Composers such as François Couperin brought refinement and elegance to chamber music, which became an important part of courtly life.
